Observability

Telemetry coverage, alert quality, incident response and runbooks.

Capability in business terms

Why this capability matters

More alerts do not mean more control. Every page must be actionable for the person receiving it.

What we typically scope

Telemetry coverage, instrumentation, alert quality, incident response, runbooks, SLOs.

How we approach the work

Delete first, instrument second. Connect telemetry to service health rather than to component status.

Work we take on

Example engagement — illustrative. Typical scopes of work, not named client case studies.

Alert fatigue

Why it happens
On-call receives dozens of pages a week and silences most without reading them.
How we work it
Measure the actionability rate over ninety days, delete alerts that produced no action, separate page-now from will-break-soon from interesting, require an owner and a runbook link for every surviving alert.
What you end up with
A measured actionability rate with a target, a reduced alert set where each has an owner and a runbook, and the noisy ones deleted rather than muted.

Incidents found by customers

Why it happens
Outages are reported by customers before monitoring detects them.
How we work it
Define service level indicators from the user journey, add synthetic checks on critical paths, instrument real user monitoring, set SLOs with error budgets, alert on budget burn rather than on resource thresholds.
What you end up with
User-journey SLOs with burn-rate alerting, and a measured reduction in customer-first detection.

A distributed system nobody can debug

Why it happens
A request crosses eight services and diagnosing a slow request means eight people on a call.
How we work it
Implement distributed tracing with consistent context propagation, standardise structured logging with a shared correlation ID, link traces to logs and metrics, instrument the slowest paths first.
What you end up with
End-to-end traces on critical paths, with diagnosis possible from one console rather than eight people.

Observability spend out of control

Why it happens
Telemetry ingestion cost has become one of the largest line items and volume keeps growing.
How we work it
Analyse ingestion by source and query usage, identify data never queried, apply sampling to high-volume low-value traces, tier retention by value, move debug logging behind a switch.
What you end up with
Ingestion reduced with the queried signal preserved, and a written retention and sampling policy.

Postmortems that change nothing

Why it happens
Incident reviews happen and produce actions that are never completed.
How we work it
Standardise a blameless RCA format, require a named owner and date per action, track actions in the normal backlog rather than a separate document, review completion at the monthly service review, report recurrence.
What you end up with
RCA actions tracked to completion with owners, and recurrence reported as the measure of whether they worked.

Ways to engage

How we approach the work

Understand the estate

Map dependencies, constraints, decision owners and the current operating model.

Make the decision explicit

Record options, risks, costs and acceptance criteria before implementation.

Make the handover usable

Document changes, operating instructions and the remaining risks.

Delivery is subject to specialist fit and availability.

Start with clarity.
